Fibre Art and Button Jewelry

From fibre artist to maker of button and knitted wire jewelry: Liz is not unused to such huge leaps. After moving from her native England, eleven years ago, it seemed like a natural progression. Taking a mundane object, such as a man’s tie and reinventing it as a dainty evening purse is just one example of her creativity. To Liz, fine coloured wire knits into a delicate framework for buttons and beads, while buttons begged to be showcased along side pearls and garnets as bracelets, earrings and pendants.

Candy Glendening

Candied Fabrics

I am constantly inspired by the color and patterns I see around me. I find that I MUST be making something, and the media that sings to me is white fabric and dye. I dye fabric and then use this fabric to make art quilts as well as items I call “Everyday Art”: bags to carry your stuff, silk scarves to drape around your neck: these are all opportunities to create an item that brings joy to the senses of sight and touch. The “quArt” (art quilts to hang on the wall) I make is interactive art…purposefully abstract and mounted for hanging in any direction, to be combined to create larger compositions that can be altered at the whim of the viewer. I’ve also begun working in 3 dimensions, and have created a series of houses made from art quilts. I blog about my artistic process here: candiedfabrics.com/journal/

Adele Johnson

Elegant LMB Designs

My motto is “Elegance (with a little fun) is always in style”.
I work mainly with precious and semi precious stones, pearls, sterling silver, gold fill and high quality gold vermeil. I also make a few pieces that are just for fun, which sell for a bit less but are big on style.

Joyce Maggard

Fine Gourd Art

A child wanders through the field and farm in her hunt for little treasures…a shiny rock, a pretty feather, an unusual seedpod. She considers the beauty and simplicity of natural shape. Perhaps she will just save her discovery or make something interesting with it.

I am that child and she still lives within me. I delight in the concept of creating art from a simple element of nature, the gourd. To weave pine needles and other plant materials onto a gourd gives new dimension to fiber art. The gourd becomes a soft wood when touched with a drill bit or carving bur. It can also become a palette for the wood burner and the paint brush.

Creating with my hands has been a lifelong pursuit. A childhood 4H project taught me to love sewing and quilting. College ceramics course ballooned into a twenty year obsession with wheel thrown pottery. Upon retirement from the professional world, I wondered what artistic avenue I would follow. It was pure serendipity that gourds found me and have been the center of my life for almost five years.

You will always find finished gourd art to admire at my Yucaipa studio. I also offer individual and group workshops.

Linda Weinstock

Kiln Glass Art Wear

Linda has been working and designing with glass since 1980. Glass has given her the ability to build windows, make trophies, create sculptures and mosaics. Today she continues to express herself through the medium of art glass fusion. She favors dichroic glass, which contains a multi-layered coating that creates a gemstone quality. She is currently testing and creating pieces using shards of vintage antique glass available from articles that are broken or damaged beyond repair. The glass is in a very real way, a partner in my artistic journey, and I often feel like I’ m not so much working in the medium as working with it.

Dimensional Collage Artist

Long ago, for fun, Margaret built complex polyhedrons out of cut paper. In college, she studied both art and psychology, working in monoprint, collagraph, blind embossing and hand-papermaking. Today her art making still shows her love for paper. She uses solid papers in bright colors to create layered, dimensional collages that are sometimes non-objective and at other times abstractly reference nature. Their artistic foci are positive-negative space, transparency and an active visual balance. They are mounted so they appear to “float” in the frame. Several recent series are on the themes of “Burning Bushes” and “Stars” (the kind in the sky) and a new series of “Fans”. In addition, she will offer a new 2009 Advent Garland.

Fariad Ali

“I have been documenting this poetry in life for some 38 years now. I currently live in the United States, and my paintings have expanded beyond wildlife to include landscapes and Western art. I try to expose the image with deliberate and rhythmic brushwork and a mesh of thick and thin paint to try and capture the life and feeling of what I am looking at.”

Jennifer Ali

Jennifer’s profession as a fine artist began over 29 years. She began her career painting a mural of movie star portraits during her high school years in Michigan. That’s where she caught the excitement and satisfaction of being an artist that would carry her through to today Out of college she landed a position as Art Director and private label fabric designer for Diane Von Furstenburg. She has been the recipient of numerous awards and publications.

Jennifer portrays nature with a vitality that is fresh with color and timeless in content. Her work evokes life’s simple moments. She finds inspiration for her work from little gardens and sanctuaries to the apple orchard community of Oak Glen, CA where most of her compelling stories occur. Over the years Jennifer has created a name for herself in portraiture, equine and floral genres. Her ceramic sculptures as well are being sort after. She has been an integral part in developing Wildlife Images Gallery and Publishing. A company, created by her husband, publishing, showcasing and distributing their art throughout the United States. In 2009, they celebrate their Gallery’s 13th Anniversary on the Historic Parrish Pioneer Ranch in Oak Glen.

Tony Barber

Greenman glass

Kathleen Bryan

Janet Edwards

Janet Edwards is a Redlands artist whose work reflects her love of the natural beauty of California, as well as her respect for sites of historical importance. While working primarily in the etching medium, she is also an accomplished watercolorist, a watercolor-like style is often reflected in her work. Many etchings include embossing as part of the design.

Janet is a graduate of the University of Redlands, having earned a B.A. degree in Art Education. She taught public school art before raising a family. A past president of the Redlands Art Association. Janet is currently chair of that organization’s art endowment fund. Her work has been chosen by educational, cultural and civic organizations to honor dignitaries, professors, musicians, ambassadors and politicians.

Janet’s work may be seen, in her home studio in Redlands, at the RAA gallery and at Haven Home Essentials in Redlands, in galleries in Cambria and Mendocino, CA and in Yachats, OR.

Bill Garton

Artistry in Wood

William Garton has worked in various areas of woodworking for many years as a sideline to his profession of physical therapy, designing making and installing cabinets, designing and making furniture, as well as framing and finishing work. Several

After retiring in 1996, Bill started a business of restoring kitchens and bathrooms. Having received a wood-turning lathe as a birthday gift from his family in 1994, he occasionally tried his hand at learning the art of the use of a lathe. Relying on a book for beginning turners and using pieces of firewood, he soon learned to turn bowls suitable for gifts to family and friends.

Becoming more and more intrigued with the possibilities of self-expression that turning allowed, he closed his restoration business and began experimenting with different ways of cutting and laminating woods of various colors that would produce not only multicolored but interesting designs when turned on the lathe. After six months of trying different methods, Bill finally produced a form that he was looking for. From these blanks he began turning pepper mills which have become his signature pieces.

When the blank has been rounded to size, he lets his artistic side take over and shapes the piece, using different tools until the desired design is formed. Bill uses no dyes or stains but relies on a finish of oil and buffing to bring out the colors of the wood. He also uses this same method of lamination in many of his salt mills, rolling pins, candle holders and ornaments.

His pieces have won awards in art shows and fairs.

Bill is a member of The American Association of Woodturners, Redlands Art Assoc., Sun Lakes Art Guild and Sun Lakes Woodworkers.

Margaret Goodward

GretchenArt

GretchenArt was founded to explore the edge-of-the-envelope developments in art, science and computer technology to both revive the past and forge forward into the future. Specializing in mixed media paintings and photoart in multiple output options as oil or acrylic on canvas, pastel enhanced on fine art media, watercolor and colored pencil as well as prints, Gretchen of GretchenArt creates and enables others to create, their own family treasures-small to large works of art suing a combination of digital photography, Photoshop, Corel Painter, Artweaver, and twisted Brush plus multiple natural media and brushstrokes of the masters based upon submitted photos, ideas and/or photos taken by the artist herself. GretchenArt Studios are in San Francisco, CA; Austin, TX; Redlands, CA and the World Wide Web at www. GretchenArt.com.

Shane M Keena

As an avid scuba diver marine forms are sources of visual and formal inspiration, yet my agenda is not to recreate what already exists in the world but rather to create objects that are chimeras; the result of a blending of ideas begging the question; “is it animal, mineral or vegetable?” I am for my work to come to life within arm’s reach, where eyesight blurs into touch with the objective of creating new, enigmatic and uncategorized art forms.

Judith Sparhawk

Redlands photographer Judith Sparhawk is well-known for her beautiful Redlands scenes, her intricate dimensional collages, and her unique close-up photography. She has recently taken her art to new levels, working with photo art techniques to create interesting beautiful special effects. She is especially intrigued by color, line and patterns, which is reflected in her work.

She has had her work accepted into juried exhibitions, and has won numerous awards in the last ten years. her work hangs in many homes and businesses in the local area. Sparhawk has had her photographs published in two anthologies and in a calendar.

Sparhawk recently published a book of her close-up photographs titled “The Spiritual Path: Visions Along the Way”. She is currently President of Redlands Camera Club and Redlands Art Association. She teaches creativity workshops based on the best selling book “The Artist’s Way” by Julia Cameron. Her work can be seen regularly at Redlands City Hall and at RAA.
