Wow, its only a week away. Happy making everyone.

Look forward to seeing everyone there.

William Garton has worked in various areas of woodworking for many years as a sideline to his profession of physical therapy, designing making and installing cabinets, designing and making furniture, as well as framing and finishing work.

After retiring in 1996, Bill started a business of restoring kitchens and bathrooms. Having received a wood-turning lathe as a birthday gift from his family in 1994, he occasionally tried his hand at learning the art of the use of a lathe. Relying on a book for beginning turners and using pieces of firewood, he soon learned to turn bowls suitable for gifts to family and friends.

Becoming more and more intrigued with the possibilities of self-expression that turning allowed, he closed his restoration business and began experimenting with different ways of cutting and laminating woods of various colors that would produce not only multicolored but interesting designs when turned on the lathe. After six months of trying different methods, Bill finally produced a form that he was looking for. From these blanks he began turning pepper mills which have become his signature pieces.

When the blank has been rounded to size, he lets his artistic side take over and shapes the piece, using different tools until the desired design is formed. Bill uses no dyes or stains but relies on a finish of oil and buffing to bring out the colors of the wood. He also uses this same method of lamination in many of his salt mills, rolling pins, candle holders and ornaments.

His pieces have won awards in art shows and fairs.

Bill is a member of The American Association of Woodturners, Redlands Art Assoc., Sun Lakes Art Guild and Sun Lakes Woodworkers

It was great meeting the artists who were able to come to Adele’s house yesterday. Many thanks for coming out on a Sunday afternoon.

Finally we’ve set up our own email address: artistsforacause@gmail.com

We will start using it but this year’s artists please feel free to use the email addresses you were already using.

I can’t believe its only 5 weeks and 6 days away – I don’t mean to panic anyone.

But I think we will be meeting up at Art For Heaven’s Sake in 10 days time.

Happy making everyone.
